Art for the Heart: Why Creating Matters (Even If You’re Not a “Professional”)

Art for the Heart: Why Creating Matters (Even If You’re Not a “Professional”)

Have you ever stood in front of a beautiful painting, listened to a song that gave you Goosebumps, or watched someone shape something with their hands and thought “Wow, I wish I could do that... but I’m not really an artist”?

Here’s the truth: you don’t have to be a professional to create art or know all the techniques. All you need is curiosity and a bit of courage to try.

Art is not just something hanging in galleries. It’s everywhere. It’s in the scribbles in the margins of your notebook. It’s in the way you arrange colours in your living room. It’s in the doodles on your phone case or the way you plate your food.

It’s yours.

And the beautiful thing is, creating art isn’t about being “good” at it it’s about how it makes you feel. It’s about giving yourself permission to explore, to play, to make mistakes, and even to surprise yourself.

Think back to when you were a kid: you didn’t stop to think, “Is this drawing good enough?” You just grabbed crayons and dove right in. Somewhere along the way, we learned to fear judgment, but what if we could go back to creating like no one’s watching?
What if it’s not about being perfect it’s about being alive?

Here are some words that might help you if you ever feel that little voice saying “But I’m not good enough”:

“The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” - Sylvia Plath
Doubt will show up, but it doesn’t get to hold the paintbrush.

“You don’t have to be good at something to enjoy it.” - Unknown
Imagine how much more fun we’d have if we didn’t worry about being good, but just cared about enjoying ourselves.

“Create what makes your soul happy.” - Unknown
Forget trends. Forget perfection. Just follow what lights you up inside.

Ready to dive in? Here are some zero-pressure, judgment-free creative ideas:
  • Paint with your fingers. Forget brushes use your hands, get messy, mix colours, and don’t think about what it’s “supposed” to look like.

  • Make a collage from old magazines. Rip, cut, paste no rhyme or reason needed. Just follow what looks fun.

  • Pick 3 random colours and challenge yourself to make anything with them. No rules abstract, shapes, patterns, or scribbles.

  • Try drawing with your eyes closed.” Close your eyes, set a timer for one minute, and draw without peeking.

  • Write a 5-line poem about your favourite colour. Doesn’t need to rhyme, doesn’t need to make sense. Just words, just play.

No one gets to judge your creativity not even you.
Create like you used to when you were small: freely, joyfully, without explanation.

Because art isn’t about perfection it’s about connection. And sometimes the connection is just between you and the page, you and the paint, you and your joy.

So go ahead. Make something messy. Make something yours.

The world doesn’t need “perfect” it needs expression. You don’t need permission to be creative. You already have it.

These are two pieces I recently created using resin, colourful mica powder and gemstone chips. I've never resin before and I wasn't really into or expecting it to be so sticky and messy. My glove got stuck on the canvas a little bit, but it was fun. There's all lots of fun craft kits out there to try.
